The period film "Roaring Currents" has broken the box office record set by “Avatar,” attracting the most number of moviegoers in the country's cinema history.
The film's distributor CJ Entertainment said the Korean flick attracted 13-million-625 thousand moviegoers by Saturday morning to break the previous record set in 2009 by the Hollywood movie.
The Korean movie set the record 18 days after its release.
Earlier on Friday, the film became the most watched South Korean movie breaking the previous record of 13-point-01 million moviegoers attracted by "The Host" in 2006.
The film also broke one-hundred-billion won in ticket sales for the first time in Korean history.
“Roaring Currents” stars actor Choi Min-sik and tells the story of Joseon Dynasty Admiral Yi Sun-shin's stunning victory in the battle of Myeongnyang against Japanese invaders in 1597. Yi defeated over 300 enemy ships with a fleet of only 12 under his command.
