Lawmaker to Visit N. Korea to Receive Memorial Wreath for Late President Kim

Ahead of the fifth anniversary of the death of former President Kim Dae-jung, Rep. Park Ji-won of the main opposition New Politics Alliance for Democracy (NPAD) will visit North Korea to receive a memorial wreath.

Park and former Unification Minister Lim Dong-won will depart at 3 p.m. Sunday from the house of the former president located in Donggyo-dong, Seoul. They are expected to arrive at the North’s Gaeseong Industrial Complex at 5 p.m. to receive the memorial wreath.

Kim Yang-gon, director of the United Front Department of the North’s Workers’ Party, is also likely to attend the ceremony.

The two sides are expected to exchange opinions on the strained inter-Korean relations during the South Korean delegates’ stay.

Park and other delegates are scheduled to return to the South through the Inter-Korean Transit Office at 6:30 p.m.

North Korea notified the South on Thursday of its plans to hand over the wreath in its border city of Gaeseong. In the past, the former aide to late President Kim has held various roles in inter-Korean events, including serving as a special envoy to the June 2000 South-North summit.
