Seoul to Issue Stance on Geumgang Tours When UN Review Begins

The Unification Ministry says that it will announce South Korea's position on the resumption of a tour program to the North's Mount Geumgang resort after the UN Security Council reviews the issue.

A Unification Ministry official made the remark Tuesday,  reiterating that a tragic incident such as the shooting death of a South Korean tourist at the mountain resort in 2008 must never happen again.

The official said the South remains unchanged in its stance that Geumgang tours can resume only when North Korea apologizes for that incident.

The statement is believed to be in response to a remark made by a U.S. official last week.

David Cohen, U.S. Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, told reporters in Seoul last week that he does not believe resuming tours to the North Korean resort is in violation of UN Security Council resolutions.
