South Korea has a new football manager. Ulrich Stielike, manager of the Qatari side Al Arabi and a former West German national team player is now set to take the reigns of Team Korea.
The Korea Football Association said Friday that the 59-year-old German will fill the vacuum left by the resignation of former manager Hong Myung-bo in the wake of the Brazil World Cup. Under the contract, Stielike will serve at the helm of the Korean national team until the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
Uli Stielike began his coaching career with the Swiss national team in 1989. He also served as an assistant coach for the German national team between 1998 and 2000 and the manager of the German youth national team between 2000 and 2006. He then took the helm of the Ivory Coast national team between 2006 and 2008.
He has since managed Qatari clubs, including a stint at Al-Sailiya SC, where Kim Kee-hee of Jeonbuk Motors played under his leadership in 2012.
The new manager will will come to South Korea on Monday and will watch Team Korea in a friendly match with Uruguay in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, later the day.
In his playing career, Stielike played as a defensive midfielder for Real Madrid between 1977 and 1985. He also spent 10 years playing for West Germany.
