The government said Monday it would provide a total of $19.2 million dollars worth of humanitarian aid to North Korea through international organizations this year.

The donations will consist of 100,000 tons of corn worth $18 million dollars to be sent through the World Food Program, a $700,000 dollar contribution to the World Health Organization's malaria prevention efforts and a $200,000 dollar donation to the U.N. Children's Fund.

A government official said Seoul has decided to provide the aid on humanitarian grounds and in response to calls from U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
