North Korea will participate in an international military pentathlon to be held in South Korea in October.
The organizing committee for the World Military Pentathlon Championship 2014 said Thursday that the North plans to take part in the event to be held in Yeongcheon, North Gyeongsang Province, from October 8 to 16.
Sending a 15-member delegation, including 10 athletes, this year will be the first time the North has competed in the championship.
A total of 345 athletes and officials from 35 countries are set to participate in the pentathlon and will compete for gold in events such as rifle shooting, obstacle swimming, throwing, and cross-country.
The event is a pre-game for the Military World Games to be held in another North Gyeongsang city, Mungyeong, in October 2015.
The championship was created by French Captain Henry Debrus during World War II. It was held first in August 1947 with the participation of three countries - Belgium, France and the Netherlands.
