N. Korean Leader Sends Personal Letter to UN Chief

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un was known to have written a personal letter to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, leading to assessments that the North is seeking to improve ties with the UN.

A UN official said North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Su-yong delivered the letter to Ban when he visited the UN. The official said the move signifies that the North is intent on engaging in dialogue with the world organization.

Denying some media reports that Kim asked Ban to visit the North in the letter, the official said the letter's content was in line with diplomatic protocol.

The official added that by having Ri deliver the letter as the first minister-level official to represent North Korea at the UN in 15 years, implies that the North is aiming to show respect toward the UN.
