Park Calls for Interest in N. Korean Human Rights

Anchor: The presidential office has revealed the contents of a meeting President Park Geun-hye held with heads of think tanks during her visit to New York last week. The meeting was belatedly publicized after the top office controversially withdrew the news release it circulated about Park's talking points to be made at the meeting on Seoul's ties with China. The top office said the South Korean president focused instead on North Korean human rights and unification.

Report: The presidential office on Sunday revealed the contents of a meeting President Park Geun-hye held with heads of U.S. think tanks last Wednesday during her stay in New York.

At the meeting, Park focused mainly on North Korea’s human rights conditions and unification on the Korean Peninsula.

“Tensions have recently mounted in Northeast Asia over historical and territorial issues. A solution to North Korea’s nuclear issue hasn’t been found for over 20 years.”

Park said that the UN Commission of Inquiry has played a key role in raising awareness about the North’s human rights violations.

She then stressed that the international community’s continuous attention toward the North’s human rights issue will contribute to improving the conditions of the citizens in the communist state.

The decision to belatedly publicize last week's closed-door meeting came after controversy arose over the presidential office's withdrawal of an already-circulated news release. While invalidating the information package it issued before the meeting, the top office explained that Park did not in fact discuss the Seoul-Beijing relations as expected. The news release said Park would refute the claims that Seoul is leaning toward Beijing by calling it a misunderstanding.

But instead of discussing Seoul-Beijing relations, Park stressed the importance of cooperation from the U.S. and China on resolving the North’s nuclear issue. She also urged the North to respond to her Dresden declaration, which outlines her vision and goals regarding unification on the Korean Peninsula.

The presidential office said Park received briefings on key state affairs after she returned home from New York last Friday.

Attention is now being drawn to what messages the president will issue during a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday before the National Assembly's scheduled plenary session.
