S. Korea to Consider Sending Fertilizer to N. Korea upon Request

The government says it will positively review sending fertilizer to North Korea.

A Unification Ministry official told reporters Tuesday that any item can be of humanitarian aid to the North.

The official also said the government will review requests by South Korean civilian organizations to allow fertilizer to be sent to North Korea.

After the torpedo sinking of a South Korean warship by North Korea in 2010, the South imposed sanctions banning the transport of rice and corn to the North, which in effect included fertilizer in the restricted items category.

However, following President Park Geun-hye’s unification proposal announced in the German city of Dresden earlier this year, the government eased the sanctions to allow the supply of strawberry seedlings to the North.
