Gov’t to Inspect 33 Companies Using Chemicals in Gaeseong Complex

The South Korean government will examine the working conditions at 33 companies using chemicals in the Gaeseong Industrial Complex.

The Unification Ministry said that experts will carry out on-site inspections on the 33 firms for two months beginning Thursday.

The probe will focus on the chemicals the companies are using to see if they are harmful and are being handled properly. It will also look into the safety measures the companies are providing to their workers.

The ministry will evaluate the safety of the working environment at the firms through the inspection before devising measures to systematically supervise the use of chemicals.

The inspection comes after some North Korean workers at the inter-Korean complex complained of having a fever and other symptoms in late August, citing their possible exposure to toxic chemicals.
