The youth world championship of the Russian martial art of sambo will begin on Wednesday in Seoul for a five-day run.

About 700 youth sambo practitioners from 96 member countries of the International Sambo Federation (FIAS) will compete in the event.

FIAS President Vasily Shestakov will also visit a stadium in southern Seoul for the championship.

It is the first time for an Asian country to host the event, which has traditionally been held in Eastern Europe.

Sambo, which translates as "self-defence without weapons," is the martial art developed for Russia's military and police force in the 1930s.
