N. Korea Repeats Calls for Substantive Measures on Leaflet Campaign

North Korea has repeated calls for measures by South Korea to block the cross-border spread of anti-Pyongyang leaflets.

The Rodong Sinmun, an organ of the North’s ruling Workers’ Party, said on Monday that the leaflet campaign by South Korean activists is the worst obstacle to inter-Korean relations, urging South Korean authorities to swiftly take substantive measures to stop the leaflet campaign.

The paper also said that the positive atmosphere created by the North’s brave decision should lead to an improvement in inter-Korean relations, calling for an end to slander and provocation.

Also in a statement issued on Sunday, the North said if provocations such as the distribution of propaganda leaflets continue, it will respond by engaging in a stronger physical attack.

However, the North left open the possibility of holding a second round of high-level contacts with South Korea as previously agreed on. The Sunday statement noted that another round of such contacts are scheduled to be held, stressing that it is important to continue the mood of improving relations between the two Koreas.
