A South Korean government official says North Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s public appearance after a 40-day absence is believed to be intended to quell rumors surrounding his health and leadership.

The official said Kim has never been shown with a walking stick, suggesting that he may have made a hasty appearance before a full recovery.

Noting the newly-constructed housing district for scientists as the site for Kim’s long awaited appearance, the official said the location could symbolize the North’s simultaneous pursuit of economic growth and nuclear development.

The official added that Kim is believed to have chosen this particular site as he personally proposed the construction and was satisfied with the results.
