South Korean Medical Team Aids in Fight Against TB in North Korea

A South Korean medical team crossed inter-Korean borders on Wednesday to assist tuberculosis patients in North Korea.

The Gyeonggi Provincial Government said Wednesday that around 10 doctors and officials of the Eugene Bell Foundation, an Anyang, Gyeonggi-based charity group, have arrived in the North.

The medical team’s visit is aimed at delivering medication to treat North Koreans with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis and providing 500 million won’s worth of nutritional meals to the patients suffering from the disease.

The team also plans to treat the tuberculosis patients at 12 TB treatment facilities in the North until November 4.

Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis is on the rise in North Korea and requires seven to nine different medicines and at least two years to be treated.
