KBS has exclusively covered an internal document from North Korea that vividly depicts real aspects of the North’s military since Kim Jong-un came to power.

According to the document written in 2012, the North Korean leader instructed that all runaway soldiers be caught as the number of deserters was steadily increasing. The document said that commissioned officers mostly deserted the military due to circumstances surrounding money or women, while common soldiers ran away out of starvation.

The document included a story about 30 common soldiers going on a hunger strike and refusing to take part in training after food rations were reduced.

At one unit, the military confiscated hundreds of South Korean CDs and DVDs in one year alone, confirming that South Korean clips, which are widely watched among the North Korean people, have made their way into military barracks.

The document also includes the military leadership’s concerns that outside videos could rattle order inside its system.
