'Roaring Currents' to Open in China

“Roaring Currents,” a South Korean box-office hit about a 16th century Korean naval hero, will be released in China this year.

Film distributor CJ E&M said Monday that the movie will be shown in about three thousand theaters throughout China this year with China's largest state-run movie distributor, China Film Group, in charge of the film's distribution.

The running time of the film will be reduced by 20 minutes for the release in China.

The film depicts a legendary naval battle in 1597, known as the Battle of Myeongnyang, in which Korean Admiral Yi Sun-sin led a victory with only a dozen ships against Japanese warships.

An official at CJ&M said the film would attract those in China who are aware of the Battle of Noryang, another battle in 1598 during which the allied naval force of Joseon and Ming jointly fought against the Japanese. The official added that the Chinese people are greatly curious about a film that drew a record number of viewers in South Korea.
