Gov't Invites N. Korea to NE Asia Peace & Coop. Forum

North Korea is said to have been invited to the 2014 Northeast Asia Peace and Cooperation forum in Seoul set to begin next Tuesday.

A government source said Thursday that South Korea invited the North to the three day forum when it sent out invitations to other countries, including the U.S., China, Japan, and Russia, but the North has yet to reply.

If the North takes part in the event, senior officials from all participating nations of the six-way nuclear talks will gather in one venue.

Under the theme, “Chartering the Course to a Peaceful and Cooperative Northeast Asia,” the forum is expected to bring together vice-level or deputy assistant-level officials. The event will be the first government-level meeting to be held on President Park Geun-hye’s Northeast Asia Peace and Cooperation Initiative. Other topics will include nuclear safety, energy security and cyberspace.

The Northeast Asia Peace and Cooperation Initiative, which was one of Park’s campaign pledges, is a process for building an order of multilateral cooperation and trust. The initiative aims to have Northeast Asian countries build trust in handling environmental issues, natural disasters and nuclear energy as well as combating terrorism.
