Civic Groups' Plan to Fly More Propaganda Leaflets Fall Apart

Conservative activist groups' plan to fly more anti-Pyongyang propaganda leaflets fell apart after opposition from some progressive activists and residents of the inter-Korean border region.

The groups arrived at the Imjingak Pavilion area on Saturday morning to fly the leaflets as announced, but a group of Paju residents and progressive activists blocked their entrance to the parking lot.

The standoff ended when police intervened and tore them apart. However, the two sides continued rallying in the area until around 2 p.m.

The conservative groups pledged to return to the area with more leaflets and new balloons to push ahead with their original plan.

About 700 policemen were sent to the area, prepared to respond to any emergency situations. In the process of stopping the confrontation, police arrested a suspect for allegedly damaging the conservative groups leaflets and balloons.

Earlier in the day, a group of representatives from companies engaged in inter-Korean businesses also held a press conference urging civic groups to stop flying propaganda leaflets over the border.

North Korea has been labeling the launch of anti-Pyongyang leaflets as "an act of war" and hinted at canceling the high-level inter-Korean talks agreed upon earlier this month if Seoul doesn't take measures to stop the leaflet campaign.
