Joseon Era Vessel Discovered Off Nation's West Coast

A vessel with more than 100 pieces of white porcelain originating from the Joseon Dynasty has been discovered in waters off the island of Mado in Taean County, South Chungcheong Province.

The National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage said Wednesday that it salvaged 111 pieces of Joseon white porcelain from the vessel, which it named Mado 4, sunken in the Yellow Sea.

The discovery was made as part of an underwater archaeological investigation that has been taking place in the area since the beginning of June.

Two Buncheong Celadons, or grayish-blue-powdered celadons, presumed to be from the early Joseon era, were also recovered from the ship.

Further investigation must be conducted, but local pundits believe the latest finding would mark the first discovery of a Joseon era vessel in the history of the country’s underwater archeology.
