First Joseon Era Vessel Discovered Underwater

Anchor: Another ancient vessel has been found in the Yellow Sea off Taean, South Chungcheong Province where a number of old sunken ships have already been discovered. The latest is believed to be built during the era of the Joseon Kingdom between the 14th and 19th century.

Report: A vessel with more than 100 pieces of white porcelain presumably from the Joseon Dynasty has been discovered in the Yellow Sea off the island of Mado in Taean County, South Chungcheong Province.

Vessels of the Silla and Goryeo Dynasties have been previously found but it's the first time to salvage a ship from the Joseon era.

The National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage said Wednesday that it found parts of an eleven-point-five meter long, six meter wide vessel near Mado Island. It also recovered two pieces of grayish-blue-powdered Buncheong Celadon from inside the ship.

The Buncheong Celadons are presumed to be from the early age of the Joseon Kingdom, between the 14th to 19th century, given their shape and how they were made.

The institute also salvaged some 100 pieces of the Joseon white porcelain from waters near the vessel as the relics are believed to have fallen from the ship.

The discovery was made as part of an underwater archaeological investigation that has been taking place in the area since the beginning of June.

Further investigation must be conducted, but pundits believe the latest finding will likely mark the first discovery of a Joseon era vessel in the history of the country’s underwater archeology.

Waters near Mado Island have been dubbed the "Silla Dynasty's underwater capital" as some 30-thousand relics including Goyreo Celadons have been found since 2009 with the discovery of sunken ships from the era.

The National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage plans to examine the Joseon vessel from April when the winter season ends as high waves and strong winds are common in the area.
