S. Korea Seeks to Add Hanyang Doseong Fortress Wall to UNESCO List

South Korea is seeking to have a Joseon era fortress wall added to UNESCO’s World Heritage list.

The Cultural Heritage Administration said it, along with the Seoul City government, will submit an application to UNESCO in January for the fortress wall to be added to the list.

The administration explained that the Hanyang Doseong fortress wall is a historical relic that shows the construction technology of the Joseon Dynasty. It added that the fortress wall has considerable historical values that qualify it to be added to the UNESCO list.

The 18-point-six kilometer defensive wall was built to surround Hanyang, the capital of the Joseon Dynasty and currently the central part of Seoul, along the ridges of four mountains in the city.

As of last year, some 70 percent of the Hanyang Doseong fortress wall was repaired and restored.
