Switzerland Says Can't Freeze N. Korea Assets Without Sanctions

Local media says the Swiss government has stated that there will be no additional freezing of North Korean assets within the country without additional sanctions from the UN Security Council.

The Swiss daily newspaper, Tribune de Genève, reported that the Swiss President Didier Burkhalter said the government was only ready to sanction assets held by North Korea's leadership inside the European country if there were new changes at the UN Security Council.

The comments were made in regards to a letter sent to the president in September by 20 North Korean defectors. The letter requested that the North Korean funds be frozen by Swiss banks.

The defectors who had sent the open letter to the Swiss president had escaped North Korea after been held in labor camps or subjected to torture.
