S. Korea to Install Ebola Detection Equipment at Gaeseong Factory Park

The South Korean government has accepted North Korea’s request to install Ebola detection devices at the Gaeseong Industrial Complex.

A Unification Ministry official said Seoul will set up three thermal scanners at the North’s immigration office in the factory park following Pyongyang’s request made on October 29.

The two Koreas will soon sign an agreement on the installation, which will be in the form of a “lease,” as thermal scanners are categorized as a strategic item and exporting them to the North is prohibited.

North Korean personnel will operate the thermal scanners under the supervision of officials from the South Korean committee on managing the industrial zone.

Amid the 2009 pandemic of the H1N1 influenza, the South Korean government installed virus detection devices in the inter-Korean joint venture at Pyongyang’s request.

Approximately 300 to 400 South Korean and foreign workers visit the Gaeseong Industrial Complex each day.
