Gov't Hopeful S. Korea-China FTA Will Boost Gaeseong Products Sales

The Unification Ministry projected the sales of products manufactured in the inter-Korean Gaeseong Industrial Complex will be expanded thanks to the South Korea-China free trade agreement (FTA).

A ministry official said Tuesday that the bilateral trade accord is expected to expand exports of good from the Gaeseong complex to China and boost their competitiveness.

The official noted that under the FTA, products made in outward processing zones outside South Korea will be recognized as South Korean made.

The official also commented on reports that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un discussed the dilapidation of mountains in North Korea at a sapling farm, saying it is regrettable Pyongyang is passive about South Korea's offer for help on the matter.

The Seoul government has expressed its will to support the North with projects to build or operate sapling farms and prevent disease and harmful insects in the mountains with the aim to help improve North Korean people's lives.

North Korea said that any support, even on the civic level, is unacceptable if it is connected to President Park Geun-hye's Dresden declaration. During a speech in the German city in March, Park vowed to increase humanitarian assistance to North Korea.
