Religious Groups Apply to Meet N. Korean Counterparts

The Ministry of Unification said Thursday that it is reviewing a request by seven religious organizations to hold communication with North Korea on planning an inter-Korean event.

The organizations include the National Reconciliation Committee of the Seoul Archdiocese, a Catholic group dedicated to North Korean aid, the Korea Conference of Religions for Peace and the Koreaness Awakening Movement Union.

The groups plan to meet North Korean religious officials in Beijing for one week beginning November 16 to discuss the joint event. The North Korean side will include Jang Jae-on, chairman of the Central Committee of the North Korean Catholic Churches’ Association.

The unification ministry said it will keep its stance of allowing purely social and cultural exchanges with the North and that it will make a decision on the matter soon.
