The Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported on Monday that a hat worn by Napoleon was auctioned off to a South Korean.
The AFP said that the Osenat auction at Fontainebleau sold the two-pointed hat to a South Korean collector at one-point-eight million euros, or around two-point-58 billion won, on Sunday.
Local media outlets reported it to be the highest paid hat at any auction in the world.
AFP identified the South Korean buyer as a businessman, TK Lee, but the auctioneers did not give his information in detail.
The black felt hat, a trademark for Napoleon, was given as a present to a veterinarian in his military unit. The hat was put up for auction by Monaco’s Grimaldi family.
Napoleon is said to have worn around 120 hats during his reign as French emperor, but only 20 of them still exist. AFP said two of them are owned by an individual, with the rest being kept at museums across the world.
