Hyundai Group Chairwoman Hyun Jeong-eun has returned from her one-day trip to North Korea after attending an event marking the 16th anniversary of South Korea’s now suspended tours to the North's Mount Geumgang resort.
Returning to the South on Tuesday afternoon, Hyun told reporters that the two sides held a joint ceremony marking the anniversary and agreed to work to resume the tours within this year.
The chairwoman said that about 20 North Korean officials attended the ceremony, including Won Dong-yon, the deputy head of the United Front Department of the ruling Workers' Party.
She added that the participants planted a tree to solidify their commitment to resuming the tours.
Hyun said that she did not receive any message from North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
A delegation of 22 officials, including Hyun, visited the North on Tuesday morning through the inter-Korean transit office in Gangwon Province. They returned at 4:15 p.m. after attending the ceremony and inspecting the tourist facilities at the resort.
