Unification Ministry: Will Join Global Efforts to Improve N. Korean Rights

The Unification Ministry said Wednesday that South Korea will cooperate with the global community to substantially improve North Korea's human rights conditions.

Ministry spokesman Lim Byeong-cheol made the remark at a news briefing after the UN Third Committee passed a resolution on North Korea's human rights on Tuesday.

Lim said the issue of human rights should be approached from the perspective of universal values. He added that the Seoul government is actively taking part in global discussions on North Korean human rights.

When asked about the ministry's stance on the part of the resolution that calls for the referral of the North's human rights situation to the International Criminal Court, the spokesman said that South Korea also co-sponsored the resolution.
