North Korea’s official newspaper said Monday that the regime held a ceremony commemorating Sunday’s fourth anniversary of the shelling attack on the South Korean island of Yeonpyeong in the Yellow Sea.
The Rodong Sinmun said representatives of the North’s governing Labor Party and the military, including Ri Song-guk, the head of the North’s fourth military unit that covers the Northern Limit Line, attended the event in Kangryong County, South Hwanghae Province. North Korean soldiers who took part in the shelling on Yeonpyeong and residents of the county were also present during the ceremony.
At the event, Ri gave a speech citing North Korean leader Kim Jong-un that the North will annihilate the enemies if they drop even the smallest flame on North Korean soil and will achieve the historic feat of unification.
Ri also claimed that the shelling was a heroic achievement for the North Korean military and taught a lesson to the South Korean armed forces. He said the shelling will go down in history as a proud moment for the North.
Preceding the ceremony, the Rodong Sinmun had issued a threat to Seoul on Saturday, saying South Korea should not forget the lesson from the lost battle of Yeonpyeong.
Sunday marked four years since the North's shelling killed two South Korean marines and two civilians, while wounding around 20 others. It was the first artillery attack by the North on South Korean soil since the end of the Korean War.
