Washington has asked Seoul to send more troops to Iraq, in addition to the engineering and medical units South Korea already committed. A government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the United States made the request on Monday. The United States reportedly wants additional troops from South Korea to help guard camps for Iraqi prisoners after the war is over. The Defense Ministry said it is not considering the dispatch of additional soldiers to Iraq. The government plans to send some 600 military engineers and 100 medics to Iraq after the National Assembly passes a motion on the matter.
