Washington and Pyongyang are considering holding another track one-point-five meeting between North Korean Foreign Ministry officials and U.S. civilian experts on Korea affairs.
A number of diplomatic sources revealed the on-going discussions on the matter on Wednesday. They said topics and participants are not finalized for the planned meeting in Singapore next month.
Sources suggested, however, that the North’s chief delegate to the six-way nuclear talks, Ri Yong-ho and deputy delegate, Choi Son-hee are likely to represent the North at the one-point-five track dialogue. The U.S., meanwhile, is most likely to be represented by Stephen Bosworth, the former special representative for North Korea policy and Joseph DeTrani, the former director of the National Counterproliferation Center under the U.S. Director of National Intelligence.
Both Bosworth and DeTrani have voiced the need for exploratory talks with the North to seek ways to block the North’s advancement in nuclear capability and to resume the six-way nuclear talks.
If the informal talks do take place, the event could serve as an opportunity for Washington and Pyongyang to indirectly sound out each other’s stances on resuming dialogue.
