N. Korea Amends Gaesong Labor Regulations, Scraps 5% Ceiling on Wage Hikes

North Korea has announced it will scrap its five-percent ceiling on wage increases for its workers at the inter-Korean Gaesong Industrial Complex.

The North's propaganda Web site, Uriminzokkiri, said Saturday that ten provisions in the labor regulations for the Gaesong Complex workers were amended.

The revisions call for setting the minimum monthly wage for North Korean employees at 50 dollars and eliminating the wage increase ceiling. Instead, the revised regulation requires resetting workers' wages every year based on their productivity.

The minimum wage for North Korean workers at the complex had been raised by five percent each year based on agreements by officials in South and North Korea.

South Korea's unification ministry has said it has received no official statement from the North regarding the changes at Gaesong and is currently looking into the details.
