IOC to Allow Venue Changes to Pyeongchang, Tokyo Olympics

The chief of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) says South Korea and Japan will probably be allowed to change venues for their Olympic events to reduce costs and unnecessary spending on building new facilities.

IOC President Thomas Bach made the remarks on Saturday after the IOC executive board held a meeting in Monaco.

Bach said that South Korea and Japan, the hosts of the 2018 Winter Olympics and the 2020 Summer Games respectively, will be allowed to change the venues and sports for their events. The IOC chief said that he will visit the two nations early next year to discuss the issue.

The IOC is known to have proposed to the Pyeongchang organizing committee that they will save over 130 billion won in construction costs and maintenance if it holds bobsled and luge events in existing facilities in other countries.
