The South Korean government opposed Pyongyang's recent decision to scrap its five-percent ceiling on wage increases for its workers at the inter-Korean Gaeseong Industrial Complex.
Unification Ministry spokesman Lim Byeong-cheol said in a regular briefing Monday that the North's decision is regretful and violates the agreement between the two Koreas.
He argued that consultations must be held between the two sides to make improvements as they have previously agreed to improve the wage system in line with international standards.
Lim said the government hasn't received any information on the matter from the North, adding that it will make a decision on how to respond when it confirms the specifics of the amendment.
The North's propaganda Web site, Uriminzokkiri, said Saturday that ten provisions in the labor regulations for the Gaeseong Complex workers were amended. The revisions call for setting the minimum monthly wage for North Korean employees at 50 dollars and eliminating the wage increase ceiling.
