260 Added to List of Korean War Abductees

The government has added 260 more people to the list of those who were abducted by North Korea during the Korean War in the early 1950s.

The Ministry of Unification said Wednesday that the addition was confirmed during Monday's 16th meeting of a state committee aimed at restoring the honor of South Korean citizens who were forcibly taken to the North during the war.

Among the newly-recognized abductees are former prosecutor No Gu-hyeon and Han Nam-soo who fought for Korean independence against colonial Japan and served in the colonial-era Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea.

With the latest addition, the number of officially recognized South Koreans abducted to North Korea during the Korean War has jumped to three-thousand-635 people.

The committee, which launched its operation in December 2010, has extended the period of applications for abductee recognition from the end of this year to December 12 next year.
