Asiana, UNICEF Coin Collecting Program Tops 10 Billion Won

Anchor: Since kicking off in 1994, Asiana Airlines has teamed up with UNICEF to carry out a campaign of collecting foreign coins for programs that help those in need. In the past 20 years, the coin collecting campaign has raised 10 billion won, or about 10 million dollars.
Our Park Jong-hong has more.

Report: Following a long distance journey, flight attendants come together to count the foreign coins they collected from passengers. Ranging from petty change to donations amounting to about 10 thousand won, a dozen cabin crew members sort the variety of currencies from around the world.

Flight attendant Kim Ye-jin remarks on how a little bit can go a long way.

"I feel it is significant watching how small amounts donated by clients add up to a huge sum.”

The cabin coin collecting campaign is a collaborative effort between Asiana Airlines and UNICEF that began 20 years ago in 1994.

In the first year, the gross amount of the campaign reached 160 million won.

Managing Director Koo Ja-joon of Asiana said the amount jumped to five billion won in 2010 and kept surging to top 10 billion won this year.

"I believe this helps to nurture a culture of donation in Korea and build a warm-hearted society. We will continue to actively promote this campaign.”

The coins that are collected and counted are sent to the Korean Committee for UNICEF each week. The coins that cannot be converted into Korean currency are sent twice a year to Coin Co International, an exchange company based in London.

UNICEF has used the donations for various programs that address issues such as helping prevent malaria for children in Asia and Africa, assisting health programs for newborns and building schools.
