Choson Sinbo, a pro-North Korean newspaper based in Japan, has proposed that the two Koreas co-host the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.
Speaking on the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) decision to allow the games to be hosted by multiple countries, the newspaper suggested on Friday that South Korea use the North's Masik Pass ski resort which is geographically close and equipped with world-class facilities for the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics
The newspaper claimed co-hosting of the Olympics by the two Koreas would reduce costs and contribute to reconciliation of the people, joint prosperity and peace in the region, adding it may be an opportunity sent from heaven.
Seoul's unification minister said in response that the newspaper article is not an official proposal by North Korea and that it is not considering the idea of co-hosting the event with the North.
On December 8, the IOC passed a reform plan which allowed multiple cities to co-host Olympics.
