NK Human Rights Likely to be Placed on UNSC Agenda

North Korea’s human rights situation will reportedly be placed on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) agenda this week.

A source at the UN said that the issue is likely to be added to the UNSC agenda for discussion this week.

Three permanent members of the UNSC -- the United States, Britain and France, and seven non-permanent members including South Korea and Australia made the request to Ambassador Cherif Mahamat Zene from Chad, which holds the UNSC’s presidency for December.

Meanwhile, a UN resolution calling for the North’s human rights conditions to be referred to the International Criminal Court (ICC) is expected to pass at the plenary UN assembly on Thursday, putting significant pressure on the North.
