A South Korean civic group has proposed that the two Koreas jointly host the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympic Games.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Gangwon branch of the Committee for Implementation of the June 15 Joint Declaration said hosting the Olympics together will be a way to realize the Olympic spirit and contribute to peace on the Korean Peninsula.
It said holding the Olympics in Pyeongchang as well as the North Korean city of Wonsan would be a historical turning point for bringing peace to the divided Gangwon Province and the Korean Peninsula.
It also noted that Gangwon Province has received support and cooperation from North Korea since 2006 in winning the bid for the Pyeongchang Olympics and has agreed to expand exchanges with the North by holding international youth camps and sharing the torch ceremony.
The committee stressed that due to financial reasons, the International Olympic Committee has recommended that events for Olympic Games be hosted in multiple countries. It urged the province to consider using the Masikryong ski resort in Wonsan, which is close to Pyeongchang and qualifies to host international events.
