Seattle Art Museum to Return Seal of Joseon Dynasty

A stolen seal of the Joseon Dynasty will return from the United States in March next year.

The Cultural Heritage Administration said Tuesday that the Seattle Art Museum has agreed to return the ceremonial seal “deokjongeobo” produced in the era of King Seongjong in the 15th century.

The ceremonial seal used by the royal family had been kept at Jongmyo Shrine but was stolen in 1924 during the period of Japanese colonial rule. The seal is said to have been donated to the Seattle Art Museum by an art collector in 1963.

The administration said that the return was made possible through friendly negotiations with the foreign museum and will have a positive impact on the country’s efforts to retrieve looted cultural property from overseas.
