Unification Minister Rejects N. Korea Attempt to Raise Wages in Gaeseong

Unification Minister Ryoo Kihl-jae has said that North Korea’s attempt to revise labor regulations at the inter-Korean Gaeseong Industrial Complex would be in violation of the bilateral agreement to jointly operate the complex and would seriously hurt progress in South-North relations.

Ryoo addressed the issue of North Korea unilaterally trying to raise the minimum wage at the Gaeseong complex during a speech at a forum on unification on Thursday.

He said that raising wages without improving labor productivity will erode the investment and business environment of the factory park and that North Korea will lose the trust of the international community.
