White Paper to Maintain 'Enemy' Label for N. Korea

The Defense Ministry will maintain the expression of indicating the North Korean regime and its military as an “enemy" in the 2014 defense white paper to be published next week.

In a Tuesday briefing, Defense Ministry spokesman Kim Min-seok said the ministry has defined North Korea as an enemy in the white paper since 2010 and will continue the definition in this year's report.

The current white paper states that the North has posed serious threats to South Korean security by launching military provocations and that as long as such threats continue, the North Korean regime and its military are an enemy of the South.

The white paper, released every other year, details South Korean military activities and regional defense trends, including changes to North Korean combat power, the security situation in Northeast Asia and the South Korea-U.S. alliance.
