Representatives of Hyundai Group and the Kim Dae-jung Peace Center visited North Korea on Wednesday to meet Kim Yang-gon, the North’s point man on the South, in the North’s border city of Gaeseong.
In a meeting with reporters before the trip, former Culture Minister Kim Sung-jae, who is one of the six officials of the Kim Dae-jung Peace Center, said he will deliver Kim Yang-gon’s message to Lee Hee-ho, the widow of late President Kim.
The visit to the North was arranged at the invitation of Kim Yang-gon, director of the North's United Front Department in charge of South Korean affairs. In the invitation letter, Kim said he wanted to thank the center and the Hyundai Group for the wreaths they sent to commemorate the third anniversary of the death of former North Korean leader Kim Jong-il last week.
Hyun Jung-eun, the chairwoman of Hyundai Group, the operator of the suspended inter-Korean tourism to Mount Geumgang, also visited the North along with six other officials of the group.
Park Jie-won, a close aide to former President Kim and a lawmaker of the main opposition New Politics Alliance for Democracy (NPAD), was also invited by the North. However, Seoul disapproved of him making the trip as he has already visited the North twice in the past two months.
The visiting delegation is said to have received a letter from North Korean leader Kim Jong-un addressed to former first lady Lee Hee-ho.
