Korean American writer, Suki Kim, has raised the issue that the hype behind the Sony hacking is overshadowing the issue of North Korea’s human rights violations.
In an article contributed to the U.S. online current affairs and culture magazine, Slate, Kim said the more serious issue of the North’s human rights situation is being buried under reports about the cyber attack.
She said the scandal appears to be following the usual course created by North Korean propagandists where the more serious story is pushed behind “sensational headlines” that only benefit the regime. She said this time the issue being overshadowed is the one thing Pyongyang “desperately wants the world to ignore.”
Kim taught English at the University of Science and Technology in Pyongyang for six months from July 2011, before the death of former North Korean leader Kim Jong-il. She is the author of “Without You, There is No Us: My Time With the Sons of North Korea's Elite.”
