Report: Amid signs of thawing inter-Korean ties, South Korean civic groups have begun sending anti-Pyongyang leaflets in giant balloons to North Korea from the border region. One of the leaflet groups also pledged to send USBs and DVDs across the border containing the controversial film "The Interview," a Hollywood comedy about a fictitious plot of assassinating the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

Report: A South Korean civic group consisting of North Korean escapees sent anti-North Korean propaganda leaflets over the inter-Korean border on Monday.

Police said the civic group flew some one-point-35 million anti-Pyongyang leaflets in giant balloons across the border into North Korea from Yeoncheon, Gyeonggi Province, and in Cheorwon, Gangwon Province, on Monday night.

Leaflets were distributed for 30 minutes in the border town of Yeoncheon, where a number of North Korean anti-aircraft machine gun shells were dropped last year after the North fired at the leaflet balloons.

The head of the civic group, Lee Min-bok, a defector himself, said his group would continue to distribute the propaganda leaflets despite signs of thawing inter-Korean relations.

Some observers express concerns that the leaflet campaign could strain cross-border relations again, noting the two Koreas are just moving to hold dialogue and improve their relations.

However, many activists are adamant. The head of the "Fighters for Free North Korea," pledged to send balloons carrying the controversial Hollywood comedy, "The Interview," which depicts a fictitious plot of assassinating North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

The activist said he will receive a total of about one-hundred thousand USBs and DVDs of the film from the New York-based Human Rights Foundation.

A Unification Ministry official said it is impossible for the government to block anti-Pyongyang leaflet distributions in advance. The official urged Pyongyang to agree to dialogue with Seoul without attaching unreasonable conditions, like the ending of the leaflet campaigns.
