A subcommittee of the Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee of the National Assembly has passed a resolution calling on South and North Korean governments to abide by their agreements on suspending cross-border slander.
The resolution urged the two Koreas to faithfully enforce the clause banning acts of verbal provocation and slander as agreed in the July 4 inter-Korean joint statement signed in 1972, the 1991 inter-Korean basic agreement and the 2014 high-level inter-Korean talks.
The resolution also called on the Seoul government to take measures to ensure that the launch of anti-Pyongyang propaganda leaflets over the border by civic groups would not undermine efforts to improve inter-Korean relations or threaten the safety of residents near the border.
It expressed deep regret over the North’s threats against the civic groups, urging Pyongyang to halt all acts of provocation.
The subcommittee also resumed discussion of North Korean human rights bills proposed by ruling and opposition parties but failed to narrow differences.
