The National Assembly's Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee held a plenary session Thursday and adopted a resolution urging South and North Korea to abide by their agreements on suspending cross-border slander.
The resolution said civic groups sending anti-Pyongyang propaganda over the border is undermining efforts to improve inter-Korean relations. It urged the South Korean government to take proper measures to prevent the groups' activities from becoming a threat to the safety of citizens.
The resolution also expressed deep regret over the North’s threats against the civic groups and urged Pyongyang to stop making any provocative comments.
During the committee's plenary session Thursday, Unification Minister Ryoo Kihl-jae said the government's stance has not changed regarding the release of the anti-Pyongyang leaflets, but if necessary, the government will take action to ensure the safety of its citizens.
As Ryoo added that the leaflet activities are not that related to improving inter-Korean relations, lawmakers criticized the minister's comments.
