Myanmar Newspaper: Myanmar Government Cracks Down on "The Interview"

The Myanmar government is said to have launched a crackdown on sales of the movie “The Interview” at the request of North Korea.

In an article posted on its Website on Wednesday, the Irrawaddy, an English-language paper, said that Rangoon police began raiding distributors of the Hollywood movie and seizing copies, after a meeting between Rangoon Division Chief Minister Myint Swe and North Korean Ambassador to Myanmar, Kim Sok-chol on Sunday.

The paper said that the North Korean embassy asked the Myanmar government to take “proper action to stop the copying, distributing and selling” of the movie, which centers on a plot to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

The Irrawaddy quoted a senior official of the Rangoon police as saying that the seizure is part of regular crackdowns on uncensored films and not specifically targeting “The Interview.”
