Official: Mt. Geumgang Tour Doesn't Contradict UN Sanctions

It appears that the government has readjusted its stance on resuming tours to Mount Geumgang in the North which were suspended following the 2008 shooting death of a South Korean tourist.

A high-level government official told reporters Monday that tours to North Korea's Mount Geumgang by South Koreans don't contradict UN sanctions against the North.

Discussing Seoul's preparations for unification, the official said that the government will consult with the international community on the matter when the two Koreas reach a phase of agreement on the issue.

The South Korean government had previously placed priority on consulting with the UN first to determine if the resumption of the tour would violate the organization's measures that ban large flows of cash into the communist regime.

On the possible change in position, a unification ministry official clarified that Seoul will discuss the sanctions with the international community if there is actual progress on the issue between Seoul and Pyongyang.
