North Korea’s Korean Central Television (KCTV) has begun high-definition broadcasting.

According to North Korea Tech, a website that covers technology developments, KCTV began HD broadcasting on 3696 megahertz in the format of DVB-S2.

The site added, however, that the new feed is still being broadcast in a letterboxed format which displays widescreen content on a traditional TV format ratio.

The North is said to have changed the frequency band last Monday for its state television to broadcast in high definition.

The website said that it’s not clear whether the North has plans for terrestrial broadcasting in high definition, although the North was reported to have begun testing digital TV broadcasting at the end of 2012.
